Campania EVOO and Campania extra virgin olive oil

Olive cultivation in Campania has millenary roots. The plant was introduced by the Greeks and used not only as a food, but in the Middle Ages also for the preparation of medicines based on extra virgin olive oil by Benedictine monks. Campania is the fourth Italian region for production and there are many fine native varieties located throughout the region, from the hills of Salernitano to those of Cilento overlooking the sea, to the terraces of the Sorrento coast, from the wide expanses of Irpinia with centuries-old trees, in the Terre Aurunche in the province of Caserta up to the Benevento area. Most olive farms are small and harvested manually, without intensive cultivation. Rotondella, Carpellese, Nostrale, Biancolilla, Pisciottana in the Salerno area, are the main varieties that have significant qualitative and productive characteristics. In Campania there are 5 areas with Protected Designation of Origin (DOP): EVOO "Colline Salernitane" DOP, EVOO "Cilento" DOP, EVOO "Penisola Sorrentina" DOP, EVOO "Irpinia - Colline dell’Ufita" and EVOO "Terre Aurunche" DOP. The recognition of Campania PGI Oil is expected shortly.
